Nostalgia #77: Tapang Taal and Kakanin

Our semestral break was quite too short that we squeezed in few activities in four days such as malling and watching a movie, a trip to Tagaytay Highlands with friends, overnight stay at the resort with family on the eve of All Saints Day, a visit to our parent's grave at the cemetery and a peek to my sister's house before heading home in Manila.

On the day of All Saints Day, one of the traditions that we still live by today is the food preparation especially kakanin for our departed ones. When we dropped by at Taal Market for tapang Taal, which is my daughter's favorite, I saw an old lady selling kakanin such as nilupak na saging & camote and kalamay na mais so I bought few slices of them. After a few decades of missing this food, I have finally tasted again the genuine kalamay. My mother used to cook this for our snack when we were still young and this kakanin brought back a lot of memories in our childhood years. When I got home, I put a slice of it into a plate as an old tradition, served with a candle plus other kakanin like suman.

The photo above is my older daughter with caramelized peanuts (panutsa) and two kilos of Tapang Taal. This is what I so miss living in our province. The kakanin and tapang Taal make a perfect breakfast plus a cup of coffee.

Our Tagaytay Highlands trip up next..
The Mendiola family invited us for a Subic trip on the day we arrived home but we were already dead tired that day and needed time to recharge. Thank you so much guys for that wonderful Highlands experience.
