Dell Philippines Commits to Making a Difference in the Community

Pledges long-term support for four local charities in aid of children’s causes

MANILA, Philippines, November 1, 2012 -- Dell Philippines has pledged support for four local charitable organisations promoting children’s welfare and education, further extending the company’s strategic global giving efforts to make a meaningful impact to communities around the world. The identified organizations are Tahanang Walang Hagdan, Inc., Childhope Asia Philippines, Inc., Children's Joy Foundation, Inc., and Haven for Children.

With an aim to address pressing social issues, Dell will work with these charities to provide assistance through technology, know-how and volunteer support. “We find that these four organizations have many needs, donations being just one of them,” Richard Teo, president for Dell Philippines said. “The activities that they need to roll out require volunteers and additional manpower, so I see our Make a Difference program as the best way to connect our team members and the communities that can benefit from our collective giving efforts.

“Our team members have always been passionate about wanting to help different communities, but in the past, they did not know how and where to go. By formalizing our strategic giving partners, we now encourage team members to devote their time to these worthy causes,” added Teo.

“We chose our current partners because they regularly need volunteers and team support. The programs may evolve, but the need for help is always there,” he said. “Dell Philippines will strive to sustain these charitable activities and lend our time year-on-year. The ultimate goal is to spread volunteerism among our people, and to see our efforts grow and benefit the community.”

Tahanang Walang Hagdan, Inc.
Dell has been supporting Tahanang Walang Hagdan, Inc.—a rehabilitation and skills training center dedicated to helping people with disabilities become productive and self-sufficient members of society—through mentoring, donations and volunteering at the center. Tess Lloren, resource mobilization director of Tahanang Walang Hagdan Inc., said “Dell really has compassion towards marginalized sectors; not all companies will stay with you throughout the years. They have been very supportive with our outreach programs and services and have really helped us in every way.

“Dell also donated several laptops which we use in the offices making our work faster and more efficient and also use them during our community visits in places where we undertake the community-based rehabilitation program,” she added.

The two organizations have also teamed up for a sustainable recycling program, another indication of the deep partnership between the two entities. According to Lloren, recyclable materials from the Dell Philippines offices will be sent to the center to be re-purposed. Items such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles can be reused by the foundation's staff, while newspapers are woven into other products, and non-recyclable items are sold to buyers of scrap materials. “The efforts of the volunteers and the proceeds really help us in sustaining our educational program for the young and with disabilities,” Lloren said.

Childhope Asia Philippines, Inc.
Advocating the cause to protect and defend the rights of street children and turn them into productive citizens, Childhope Asia Philippines, Inc. has also benefited from donations and time expended by Dell volunteers. “We need volunteers very badly because of the wide area we cover. We need a lot of support from willing and able people to teach in the areas where we operate, to engage with the children in educational and extra-curricular activities such as sports, singing and dancing, mathematics, reading and writing tutorials, physical exercises, handicrafts, computer literacy and values formation,” explained Teresita Silva, Childhope Asia Philippines’ president and executive director.

Dell’s Teo said “Dell's partnership with Childhope is part of our commitment to actively support children’s issues which are very close to the hearts of many Dell team members. There are mothers in our organization with children of their own whom we wish to see grow up and become productive members of our communities.” At present, Dell has supported Childhope Asia Philippines with footwear donations and feeding programs.

Children's Joy Foundation, Inc.
Dell team members have also been volunteering time, offering community classes for the abandoned and neglected children sheltered at the Children's Joy Foundation, Inc.

“The Dell Philippines team has been a very good partner of the Children’s Joy Foundation in achieving our advocacy to give a brighter future to destitute children across the country by providing quality education and empowerment of computer literacy program. We believe that the true measure of our success as an institution that helps children is seeing a lesser number of computer illiterate youths and more brilliant Filipino IT professionals who are inspired by good people like the Dell team,” said Rosemarie Dimagnaong, executive director of Children's Joy Foundation, Inc.

“The Dell team also spent an evening with the children during last year’s Christmas season. They made the kids very happy, giving them a reprieve from the rigors of daily life through a night of laughter and love,” she added.

Haven for Children
Haven for Children, a government institution working with more than a hundred former street children and substance abuse victims aged seven to 13, is another primary partner of Dell Philippines. Last year, Dell provided the organization and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) with new desktop computers for the institution’s educational component. “We are very grateful to Dell for the computers they donated,” said Nieve Gentelizo, officer-in-charge of Haven for Children. “The children are now starting to learn computer basics, so Dell's donation really helped us a lot.”

Apart from donating clothing, medicine and other basic provisions, Dell team members can also volunteer for Haven for Children's computer literacy program to bolster the efforts of the five teachers in charge of the kids.

“More work can be done. Dell recognizes these concerns and our people from all levels and departments will continue to work with the four giving partners. The little things we can contribute can make a big difference,” Teo said. “If everyone of our over 1,600 team members contributes even two to three hours a month, the impact we can make in the communities and the lives of the underprivileged will be significant.”

UNICEF Philippines and Daphne Oseña Paez brings together Filipino artists for children

In celebration of the 20th year of National Children’s Month, UNICEF Philippines presents UNICEF Auction for Action, an online auction to benefit children in the Philippines and worldwide.

For the second time, this online auction brings together more than seventy pieces of work from admired artists in design, furniture, art and jewelry for a good cause. Curated and presented by UNICEF Special Advocate for Children Daphne Oseña Paez, the online auction is a product of UNICEF and Daphne’s collaboration to bring the world of art, furniture and design together with her advocacy on children. “Whenever I go to the field with UNICEF, I am heartened to see that we are doing a lot to improve children’s lives all over the Philippines. But there is always more to do; that’s why I support UNICEF.”

To celebrate the 20th year of Children’s Month this October – the only annual national celebration that puts children’s rights center stage for all Filipino children - the theme for this year’s auction is the right of children to play. “Playing is a basic right of every child, and its importance to a child’s well-being and healthy development cannot be over-emphasized. It also lends itself well as a theme for our premiere artists to work with,” adds Daphne.

UNICEF’s Auction for Action offers art lovers and collectors from all over the Philippines, the chance to bid for high quality items at discounts starting at 40% off. Items such as the Bloom from designer Kenneth Cobonpue, Fly Up from artist Michael Cacnio and a golden strand of South Sea Pearls from Jewelmer will be offered from October 1-7 only. The highest bidders win the item on offer.

“Buy a beautiful item, and help children at the same time, what could be better? Many people don’t realize that UNICEF relies entirely on voluntary donations from individuals, companies and governments and the funds raised from the auction will go towards education, health and nutrition, protection and emergency programs for children who are the hardest to reach and most in need,” said UNICEF Country Representative Tomoo Hozumi.

Watch out and bid for one-of-a-kind pieces from notable Filipino artists and designers and help make a difference for children. UNICEF Auction for Action goes live at 6 p.m. on eBay Philippines on October 1. Visit www.unicef.ph for more details.

Dell 12th Generation Server

I was privileged to have been invited to witness the launching of Dell 12G yesterday, March 7, 2012, held at Shangrial Hotel, Makati City. I am providing here the press release to give more information to my dear readers about Dell's PowerEdge 12th Generation Server.

Dell announced a portfolio of blade, rack and tower PowerEdge servers optimized for use in demanding enterprise environments. As the only one of the top five server vendors to grow server revenues in Q4 2011 with 9.7 percent year-over-year revenue growth, Dell continues to innovate to deliver features that are industry firsts and make the PowerEdge 12th generation servers the company’s highest performing, most manageable servers ever. With this new server series, customers ranging from small businesses to hyper-scale data centers can help maximize efficiency by streamlining and automating operations, help achieve better business application performance and business continuity.
(L-R) Christopher Papa, Country Manager, Dell Philippines; Allan Divinagracia, Enterprise Business Manager, Dell Philippines and Christopher Syling, Business Development Manager, Intel Microelectronics Philippines Inc.

“Dell designed the new PowerEdge servers with input gathered from more than 7,700 customer interactions in 17 countries across four continents,” said Christopher Papa, Country Manager, Dell Philippines. “Our customers told us that they need end-to-end solutions to handle the complex workload problems they face every day. As such, we built our new generation of servers, systems management and workload solutions to address the needs of business end users who require maximum performance to run mission-critical applications and IT departments which demand more efficient, secure and reliable operations.”

Christopher Papa, Country Manager, Dell Philippines

PowerEdge 12th Generation Server Portfolio

The new PowerEdge R820, R720, R720xd and R620 rack servers, the M620 blade server, the T620 tower server and C6220 based on a shared Dell infrastructure server built on the Intel® Xeon® processor E5 product family are the foundation of a complete, flexible IT solution including Dell’s extensive portfolio of storage, networking and client components and professional IT services. The next-generation PowerEdge servers, along with systems management and workload solutions, are designed to deliver performance and management gains to effectively power the most demanding applications, including collaboration, IT and web infrastructure, high performance computing, decision support and business processing.

  • New all-in-one appliances built on PowerEdge 12th generation servers. Dell vStart for Dell Private Cloud, including Dell VIS Creator software, enables IT and business end users to accelerate application and IT service delivery. The Dell Quickstart Data Warehouse Appliance, which is based on the new Dell PowerEdge servers, will be the first data warehouse appliance available on Microsoft SQL Server 2012, and will help mid-market and departmental users easily organize, access and analyze data, enabling them to make more informed decisions.

Achieve More
The PowerEdge 12th generation servers enable customers to increase application performance, availability and scalability, with new capabilities that:

  • Improve responsiveness and provide fast customer insights, delivering up to 18 percent more Microsoft® SQL® Server transactions per second than HDD storage, with new industry leading technologies like Dell Express Flash, the first server design with front accessible, hot swappable PCIe solid state disks.
  • Deliver up to three times the number of mailboxes with the capacity and capability for Microsoft Exchange with up to two times more message processing with Scalable Storage.

  • Consolidate Oracle RAC database workloads at a rate of up to 8:1, with up to 84 percent increase in power savings.

Ensure Business Continuity
Customers running PowerEdge 12th generation servers can count on continual access to the IT services that power the business, with new features that:
  • Maximize security by authenticating the integrity of updates using digitally signed firmware, safeguarding access to passwords and certificates with iDRAC Credential Vault, and using Data Wipe to remove critical data from retired or repurposed servers.
  • Ensure redundancy and maximize uptime with an array of reliability, availability, and serviceability features including hot swappable fans, disks and spare power supplies, plus unique capabilities such as Failsafe Hypervisor and Memory Page Retire.

“Today’s IT organizations are balancing pressures to become more energy efficient and stretch existing manpower further, while supporting ever increasing amounts of data. Customers are looking to make server hardware investments that deliver the best of management and performance. The 12th Generation PowerEdge servers build on Dell’s early lead in introducing embedded systems management into x86 servers with new features designed to streamline and automate data center operations.” – Matt Eastwood, Group Vice President, Enterprise Platform Research, IDC

“Dell’s PowerEdge 12th generation servers take advantage of the Intel® Xeon® processor E5 family’s leadership performance and breakthrough I/O capabilities to offer optimized solutions for customers’ most important workloads. In small scale deployments, private clouds, and enterprise datacenters, customers will also benefit from key innovations such as Dell OpenManage Power Center, which is built on top of Intel’s Node Manager solution for monitoring and implementing policies for greater energy efficiency.” – Ricky Banaag, Country Manager, Intel Microelectronics Philippines, Inc.

Dell's New Storage Solutions

A press briefing was held yesterday, October 4, at New World Hotel for Dell's Fluid Data with President Richard Teo of Dell Philippines, Sales and Engineering Senior Manager William Tan of Dell Asia Pacific Sdn and Country Manager Ricky Benipayo Lopez.

Dell announced new solutions built on its Fluid Data Architecture to optimize cost, performance and protection as storage scales with a growing organization. Highlighted solutions include its Dell Compellent 16Gbps Fibre Channel interoperability and new Dell EqualLogic Unified storage.

With Dell Compellent, enterprise data is actively, intelligently managed throughout its lifecycle so enterprises can constantly adapt to changing business conditions. Together, a Fluid Data™ architecture,
storage virtualization, intelligent software and modular hardware bring unprecedented efficiency, simplicity and security to enterprise storage. Data center resources are utilized to their full potential.
Built-in intelligence and automation ensure data is available when and where it’s needed. And an open, persistent hardware platform scales in line with business needs to protect storage investments over the
long term.

These solutions represent a milestone in Dell’s vision for a Fluid Data Architecture designed to help customers efficiently and flexibly manage data. Dell is uniquely unencumbered by legacy storage technologies and rigid philosophies that do not support customer needs in the Virtual Era. Instead, Dell is focused on the development and acquisition of storage intellectual property that delivers productivity and efficiency gains for highly-virtualized data centers.

"Organizations of all sizes continue to place a priority on boosting IT asset efficiency while improving IT responsiveness to business pressures. Ever greater exploitation of virtualization is a key element in these efforts, and the deployment of flexible and intelligent storage systems is frequently the key to successful efforts," said Richard Villars, vice president of storage and IT Strategies at IDC. "Dell's continued investment in advanced yet cost effective storage solutions along with a continued expansion of its enterprise service and solutions organization, puts the company in a strong position to help IT organizations get the most from their data centers, today, and in the future."

Dell Compellent Features 16Gbps Fibre Channel Infrastructure Interoperability

Dell has successfully demonstrated compatibility between a Dell Compellent Storage Center SAN with Brocade 6510 16Gb Fibre Channel switch and Brocade 1860 16Gb Fabric Adapter. Dell will continue to build on its leadership in enterprise storage by introducing 16Gbps Fibre Channel offerings. This new technology will help customers unleash the power of their SAN environments to support next-generation applications and cloud services. This increased performance will provide organizations investment protection and a future-ready infrastructure capable of overcoming the challenges of enormous data growth. By combining Dell's Fluid Data architecture with Brocade's 16Gbps Fibre Channel infrastructure, Dell is delivering high performing SAN solutions that empower customers to stay at the leading edge of technology.

New Dell EqualLogic Unified Storage Extends Fluid Data Architecture

In support of customers’ growing storage demands, Dell has begun shipping the new EqualLogic FS7500, the company’s latest NAS solution that works with EqualLogic PS Series arrays to deliver the only scale-out, unified storage platform for mid-size deployments. The EqualLogic FS7500 uses the Dell Scalable File System, a high-performance, clustered file system based on Dell intellectual property. The Dell Scalable File System architecture incorporates features formerly found only at the very high end including advanced caching, load balancing and multithreading for fast I/O processing. This is the first step toward Dell’s long-term vision of a uniquely feature-rich, highly-scalable file system.

Customers consolidating applications onto a unified platform are demanding improved flexibility, to react to unanticipated changes in their application environment; flexibility not delivered by legacy unified solutions. As the EqualLogic unified storage platform provides online capacity and performance scaling for both file and block interfaces, customers can easily scale their platform in any dimension to meet business requirements.

Quotes:
“We continue to transform our storage business through acquisitions and developing our own intellectual property. Our Fluid Data Architecture provides a strategy that helps customers lower the complexity and cost of managing their data. Today’s announcement marks significant progress in delivering on that strategy.” said Richard Teo, President, Dell Philippines. “The new EqualLogic capabilities extend Dell’s leadership in virtualized IP-based storage solutions that are easy to manage. The new storage arrays can help our customers run highly optimized and efficient data centers by automating configuration and improving performance without forcing forklift upgrades.”

“With the latest release of the Dell EqualLogic FS7500 Unified storage, Dell is expanding on our mid-market storage standard in terms of ease of use, reliability and performance,” said William Tan, Enterprise Storage Lead, Dell South Asia. “The EqualLogic FS7500 adds highly scalable NAS capability to the EqualLogic product line to provide a high performance scale-out unified storage solution for midsize deployments.”
