The Silent Disease

According to IOF, osteoporosis affects over 200 million people worldwide. Approximately one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone (also known as osteoporotic fracture) due to the silent disease.

Fractures, specifically hip fractures, can cause loss of function and independence with 40% of patients unable to walk independently; 60% requiring assistance a year late; 33% being totally dependent on or in a nursing home. Moreover, hip fractures cause the greatest morbidity with reported mortality up to 20-24% in the first year after a person suffers a hip fracture "We at the Pfizer Consumer Healthcare support the IOF in its advocacy to inform the people about osteoporosis and the fact that it can be prevented," says Dr. Egbert Dorado, a senior medical manager at PCH. "We echo IOF's, key message: Adequate intake of the right nutrients contributes to bone health at all ages and is a first step in osteoporosis prevention. For those who already have osteoporosis, a bone-healthy nutrition should be part of their treatment and rehabilitation program.

Three of the major nutrients that help optimize bone health are: calcium, vitamin D, and protein, with recommended daily allowances varying throughout life. "Regulating calcium levels in the body promotes better bone mass density (BMD), alongside improving muscle performance and balance. Taking a calcium supplement with adequate levels of Vitamin D3 also helps maximize calcium absorption," adds Dr. Egbert.

While proper nutrition works, it is also important to have holistic approach to osteoporosis prevention and management. "It is indeed crucial to build strong bones early in life by following a healthy diet as it is the key ingredient in helping a person achieve peak bone mass, and maintaining it throughout life. But it is equally important to avoid other modifiable risk factors including sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and alcohol use," explains Dr. Egbert.

Osteoporosis is an incurable disease, but controlling its risk factors and complying with treatment regimens where prescribed can ensure a mobile, independent, and fracture-free life.

Kim Chiu and Arnel Pineda support GSK's Win Against Asthma Campaign

A  musical press conference was held last Thursday, February 6, 2015 at Makati Shangrila for  GSK's  Win Against Asthma Today campaign  to amplify the awareness  amongst patients, the public and the medical community.   Department of Health  (DOH) Assistant Secretary Dr. Eric Tayag  graced the event and used the dance floor to support the campaign.  In his message, he said that the department has included asthma as one of the lifestyle diseases that need people's awareness.  "GSK is known to produce  treatment for asthma. This is a good partnership to create awareness and we're glad that Kim Chiu and Arnel Pineda support the campaign. There is cure for asthma and can be controlled,"  he added.

Kim Chiu, grand winner of  Pinoy Brother Teen Edition and  Arnel Pineda of famed international rock band Journey  are the new  ambassadors of  "Win Against Asthma Today" campaign.     Chiu and Pineda are  both  asthma survivors and  managed the disease through medication.

By launching the Win Against Asthma campaign, GSK is taking a very big opportunity to increase awareness and amplify existing efforts to spread information about asthma and how it can be managed. GSK strongly believes and advocates that in partnership with their doctors, asthma patients can realize that their condition need not deter them from achieving their goals.

Win Against Asthma calls Filipinos to action to consult their doctors and discuss the best way to manage their asthma.

IF KIM CAN WIN, YOU CAN TOO!

Kim Chiu has come a long way from her Pinoy Big Brother days.  She is now one of the most sought after actresses in local showbusiness.

Hailed as the country’s Teleserye Princess, a box-office queen, and one of the most pleasant and wholesome girls in the industry, one may think that Kim Chiu has had it easy.

Not many know that Kim also suffers from asthma. Kim shares that she has suffered from asthma since high school and has been dealing with it it for over 5 years now.

‘Eversince masyado na akong active. Back in high school, I played volleyball, basketball and even sipa,’ she quipped. One day, Kim shares that she just coughed non-stop and experienced unexplained shortness of breath accompanied by rapid heartbeat. She was rushed to the hospital and was eventually diagnosed with asthma. Entering showbusiness made it more challenging to manage her asthma as it entailed a lot of hours of taping and working overtime, not to mention the constant lack of sleep.

‘Sa work naming mga artista, kasama namin ang pagod at puyat pero syempre hindi naman talaga maiiwasan yun para makapagbigay saya sa iba,’ she shared. And for Kim, it is no question that the saying ‘the show must go on’ holds true even with her condition.

For others like her who are living with asthma, Kim’s advice is to be happy, enjoy and live life to the fullest. “Sa lahat ng may asthma na katulad ko, ‘wag po kayong matakot sa sakit natin. We can do whatever we want, as long as alaga nyo ang sarili nyo, regular na magpatingin sa doktor at may gamot tayo, kaya natin ito!’

For Kim Chiu, the clear choice is not to allow asthma to restrict her. Instead, Kim chooses to be a winner over asthma!

Kim Chiu likes doing something new everyday and nothing can stop her from doing so. She is one with you in your fight against asthma.

Arnel Pineda's  Breathtaking Journey.

When the famed rock band Journey needed a new vocalist to replace the legendary Steve Perry, they turned to You Tube, where they found various clips of an unknown 40-year-old band singer from the Philippines. Then, Arnel Pineda was simply just a small-town boy, living in a lonely world, covering different rock songs that included those of Journey. But fate was kind and he had the phenomenal voice, stage presence and the bearing of a natural-born rock star. Now he is living a dream that goes on, and on, and on, and on.

Arnel Pineda didn’t stop believing and his amazing journey keeps reaching unbelievable new heights. His mythical rise from the slums of Manila, to being a pizza joint singer and conquering the international music scene is nothing short of breathtaking.

Who would have known, that with every heart-pounding performance he gives, Arnel suffers from a real and literally breath-taking condition called asthma.

Asthma didn’t come ‘til later in Arnel’s life. He recalls one morning in the year 2000, while cleaning their room in their old house in Kamuning, he felt an onset of colds which he thought was just a normal thing until it got worse in just about 30 minutes. ‘Bigla nalang maga na yung ilong ko at merong shortness of breath,’ he shared. ‘Nagpahinga ako sandali pero after awhile, ayan na naman.’

Arnel found his first time condition odd and having no budget for consultation, sought the advice of a doctor-friend who discovered that his larynx was inflamed due to dust. Apparently it was a case of asthma triggered by allergies. ‘Nung una nga, eh, mahirap paniwalaan kasi malakas naman ako at hindi naman ako naninigarilyo.’ The doctor questioned Arnel about his exposure to smoke and apparently another major trigger was inhaling 2nd hand smoke from the bars and venues where he’d performed in Manila.

Eventually the triggers also came from vehicle smoke when he’d commute and ride the jeep, tricycle or taxi.  This went on for years and even worsened around the time he was discovered to be Journey’s lead singer in 2008.

But of course, Arnel, being the believer that he is, couldn’t just let his sickness topple the wonderful opportunity of raising the Filipino flag in the world of music and took everything as a challenge.

Arnel’s profession and commitment as a performer is huge since he has to face about 15,000 people when touring. His voice and energy need to be in tip-top shape while giving his all for about 2 hours. Cancelling a show or even shortening the time is never an option for the band. ‘Talagang kahit ano pa man ang mangyari, tuloy ang show, all-out ang perfomance at hindi ko pwedeng payagan na ang asthma ko ang iiral.’

Arnel has been managing his asthma for a long time. He has battled the disease, dismissed fear in dealing with his condition, and has stopped considering it a big hindrance to his career. Arnel strongly believes that as long as he works very closely with his doctor, he will win over asthma.

And with his commitment, both to bring happiness through his music or winning against asthma, indeed, he never stops believing.

Arnel is committed to bring happiness through his music and winning against asthma.

It's a lifestyle!

It's not really easy! I tell you.  I started trimming down my diet  to less salt, sweet and fatty food. My aim is not  really to have abs, of course,  and that would be ridiculous.  At my age, to have a BMI of  less than 24 would be good enough.  I added a 30-minute exercise to my daily routine, at least for the  start.  My body was kind of sore on the first day but it really worked out on me.

My first week was challenging. I started adding one cup of brown rice into my cooking pot.  The ratio is 1:1.  Though we still have white rice mixed or  until our 25 kilos of rice were consumed.  I don't know how long it will take for us to finish half sack when we could only consume 3 cups a day.  I  look forward to that day when I would serve plain brown rice in our table in every meal.  So to say, at least, we have few whole grain meal every day.

I couldn't believe the patience I exerted this week. I cooked spare ribs caldereta and put myself  into test. I only had small serving and stop. Clap! Clap!Clap!

I haven't tried  physical workouts in a gym yet. I will when I need too. For now, I am satisfied with my own program. I'm still looking for a gym buddy  to go with me and be my inspiration in case a buddy looses weight  effectively.    For now, I think there is no big difference  yet.  I haven't weighed myself   since I started  because I don't want to get disappointed once I found out that nothing really changed,   but at least for now,  sure am,  that I  lost  a  few pounds.  :)

The perils of an unhealthy lifestyle

Where do I begin? After more than a week of hiatus, I am back to blogging but I don't really know where to start. Now I understand how life it is living in the 40s. My experience made me realize that life could be very short if you live an unhealthy life. I always utter these words that I will die young, maybe 40 to 45. Realization came when I woke up one morning with shortness in breathing. I thought I was really seriously ill. I thought I will die earlier than my mother was. It put me into a severe panic attack.

Last Sunday morning, despite my condition, I managed to attend the baptismal of my friend Bed's baby and later in the afternoon for the premier screening of the movie of my friend Jing. I thought that shortness in my breathing was just a heartburn. But as the day went on, it became worst and I couldn't even move half of my body. The next morning, after that sleepless night, I couldn't bear the pain anymore and it even got harder for me because half part of my head was aching. I couldn't explain how painful it was. It was just so bad. I asked a friend to take me to the hospital for emergency treatment. We went straight to a cardiologist to seek an emergency treatment. I was given a pain reliever. Initially, I underwent an ECG test and the result was good. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. The doctor gave me some laboratory requests for complete blood chem, urinalysis and X-ray.

I was luckier because before even the storm like "Habagat" came, and that floody and rainy days over the week, I already had my complete medicine to manage my blood pressure. Goshling! HBP could've have killed me that day. For the whole week where Manila was drowned to a high flood, I was calmed because I had a maintenance for my blood pressure.

With all the results in my hand after a week, I went back to the doctor with all the laboratory results. The results were almost normal except for the bad cholesterol which I had much in my body while good cholesterol were only few. I was given a prescription for my HBP and bad cholesterol too. When my doctor checked my blood pressure, my left and right arms showed different results, extremely different with my left arm 120/80 and right with 160/100. Another request for a Doppler echo was given to locate the possible hardening of arteries and to check the condition of my blood vessel.

I realized that I risked my life of possibly having a stroke with the kind of lifestyle that I have. When I consulted a dietitian, I was given 4 months to reduce the 12 pounds excess from my body. I was advised to take 4 pounds every month with proper diet and physical activities. I need to take a lot of effort to detox my body and work hard to sweat it out for a healthier life. I am not yet obese, just a little overweight.

My diet now includes low fat, low salt and strictly no soda.

Shoo the flu this rainy season

Health woes are on the rise during the wet season. The high humidity during the rainy weather spurs the spread of harmful germs and bacteria that make us more vulnerable to different kinds of water-borne and air-borne diseases like colds, cough, influenza, viral fever, diarrhea and sore throat. Especially kids. Moms and Dads, always be on guard to protect your child from all sorts of sickness during rainy days. But when – despite your best efforts to protect them from fever and flu – make sure they’re comfortable and well cared for. Here are some TLC tips for parents for their kids :

  1. Gear them up. Don’t send them off to school without a jacket, an umbrella or a raincoat. If your area is prone to flooding, buy them rain boots so they can wade in water without contracting water-borne infections such as leptospirosis.
  2. Bathe them as soon as possible if they get soaked in the rain. Taking a shower after getting soaked in the rain is good advice. Diseases develop when the body experiences a drastic change in temperature. A shower stabilizes the cold and makes the body adjust to normal temperature.
  3. Keep your kids’ hands away from their mouths. Children are fond of nibbling and chewing on their nails, with dirty hands! Cold and flu viruses enter through the mouth, the nose and eyes. So kids shouldn’t touch their faces when their hands are dirty.
  4. Teach them to wash hands frequently and thoroughly. Preventing the spread of a disease always starts with basic hygiene. Remind your kids to wash their hands as frequently as possible. Tell them that a quick rinse won’t do the trick! It takes at least 20 to 30 seconds to kill the germs, about as long as it takes to hum a Happy Birthday song. Always let them keep a hand sanitizer or alcogel in their bags too!
  5. If they get sick, feed them nutritious soups and give them fever medicine. Mom’s good old fashioned chicken soup still works wonders in this day and age. Maybe part of its power comes from the soup’s warmth and the TLC that goes with its preparation. Sick kids always respond well to Mom’s care and concern.
  6. Ease their fever with Nexcare™ Cooling Gel Patches for Kids and Adults and get rid of their aches and pains with Nexcare Hot and Cold Pack. Nexcare™ cooling gel strips provide a cooling effect and ideal for lowering fever because they help cool the skin fast. Easy to apply and remove, they’re safe and non-medicinal so they can be used with traditional medicines. For other aches and pains, Nexcare™ reuseable Hot and Cold Pack is the ideal remedy. Dental Braces

It wasn't a simple decision because I know she will go through a difficult process, at her age. Taking braces will take at least 1 to 2  years depending on the treatment plus a monthly visit to the dentist. She had to undergo three tooth extractions because there is no space to fix the alignment. Other dentist stick to a no-extraction process but in her case where there is no space and  crowded and all the permanent teeth came out, she got no choice but to extract.

At first, she felt a little discomfort and annoyed with all the brackets, bands and wires around the mouth. She had two sleepless nights and ate only a small portion of food. It took her two weeks to adjust. A little reward helped her ease the feeling like preparing soft meal, soup and oatmeal. I know it was hard even without actually having to experience myself.

It is best to talk everything with the orthodontist  and consult the proper way how to take care of the teeth.  My daughter sometimes grinds her teeth at night. Good thing I mentioned the case of grinding and put the braces a little lower near the gums. I also bought an ortho-brush especially designed for teeth with braces. It is a soft bristled brush to prevent the removal of brackets.

Getting braces is an expensive treatment.  The cost is an ordeal itself.  Wearing braces is a painful experience but is definitely worth it because it will give a beautiful smile after the treatment.

My swollen elbow, sign of Bursitis?

I have been experiencing pain with my right elbow for many days now. It started two weeks ago when I waited for almost an hour to meet my daughter at school, holding a heavy paper bag with my right hand with stuff inside it. From that day on, I started to feel the pain and it is getting worse everyday. I feel that it's the "funny bone" and the joints that connect it that are swollen.

I asked G about my swollen elbow. I am not sure though about this pain, but with all the symptoms I've got, it is a clear sign that I'm having a bursitis, a non particular form of rheumatism. Bursitis needs medical attention giving many options like non surgical and surgical treatment. For non surgical treatment, changes of activity, elbow pads and medications are needed. While for surgical treatment, surgical procedure is needed to completely heal the elbow.

Now I am irritated and can't stay long in front of PC despite the pads that I put in my elbow. I also use stress ball to exercise my hands and closing my fist hurts me even more. Maybe, the best treatment is to rest my hands for a while now. I can still stay online but only for a limited time.

I Love Wheatgrass

I've read a lot about wheat grass and the benefits of drinking it but I never gave attention to this product knowing there are lots of wonder medicine and supplemental tea sprouting like a mushroom in the market these days. It was only last week during Blogapalooza event when EasyPha-max Wheatgrass was finally introduced to us. We actually tasted and learned more about the product. With only five minutes presentation, I was left hanging and thirsty for more info and that trigger me to do my own research about the benefits of wheat grass.

With just one sachet you'll get all the maximum benefits of this Wonder food. Wheat grass Cleanses, Alkalizes and Nourishes your body. My mother left us early because of cancer. She was only 45 years when cancer took her life away from us. It made me think that I am also prone to this incurable sickness and I don't want my kids to feel what I felt being an orphan at an early age. Discovering supplements like Wheatgrass gave me a big hope to actually prevent such thing to happen.

Wheatgrass is a super food with 13 vitamins, 10 minerals, 17 amino acids, chlorophyll and fiber which the body needs to function efficiently. Wheatgrass roots are rich in ABSCISSIC ACID that helps prevent cancer formation and growth. It is packed with more than 100 types of ENZYMES that aid in digestion and faster metabolism.

There are lot more benefits of wheatgrass that I think we all need today. It is so easy to prepare with just a sachet to dissolve in a glass of water. It is time for all of us to live a healthier life. What makes Easy Pha-max a superior to other wheat grass is that, they use leaves and roots. That makes a big difference and I want that difference to live in me today.

Please visit www.wheatgrasscan.com for more details, distributorship and more information about the products.

So Yummy, SOYAMI!

I was invited last Saturday for a Nutritious and Delicious Cooking Lesson held at SM City Annex, Active Fun, featuring healthy recipes of SOYAMI. Because I am an avid Soyami fan, since the day I discovered the many benefits of this chips, I said yes right away! Being a mom, I only want what's best for my kids especially for their baon at school. The recipes included healthy and easy-to-prepare snack for kids. When I found out the many benefits of Soyami, I always make it a point to include it in our grocery cart. What a healthy chips in a bag! It is made of Real Soya, No Transfat, No MSG but you won't feel like eating a Soya.

Pinoy Biggest Loser Nutritionist, Nadine Tengco, presented us the many recipes like Sneaky Tuna Nuggets, Mac n' Cheese (with Soyami Pizza) and Smoothies which I will post in my other blogs separately so I can share it also to other moms for healthy snacks and meals for their kids.

Here's more of the SOYAMI.

Young adults are known for living on a diet of fast food, junk food, sodas and alcohol. Body image issues and self-esteem are influential in what and how they eat. Pulling in all-nighters of heavy partying and drinking on a regular basis are high on their list of priorities for reasons of acceptance and fitting in with their peers. They abuse their bodies in all the wrong sense, thinking that their ripe, young age is a VIP pass which permits them to do anything as they please.

Sadly, being young does not make you immune to the risks of having an unfit and dangerous lifestyle. Consumption of too much cholesterol, Trans fat and sodium can lead to a lot of chronic diseases and many complications later on.

That’s why healthy eating is important to good health. If we are what we eat, then it only makes sense that we put fresh and natural foods into our bodies. And it does not have to be difficult at all. It’s not much of a big sacrifice when changes in your diet can be as simple as choosing a healthier substitute or alternative over your favorite but unhealthy indulgences. It’s all about making positive changes in your lifestyle that will result to a healthier you.

Take your usual chips, for example. Young adults consume a bag of chips excessively despite its nasty reputation for being classified as junk food. But Soyami Soya Chips turns things around by creating soy chips that are good for our bodies.

Soyami Soya Chips is finally getting snacking right by using a wholesome, natural ingredient and combining it with a lip-smacking flavor, young adults will love. It’s a healthy yet flavorful alternative to enjoy chips without junk food’s harmful effects.

High in protein and fiber, Soyami Soya chips is a perfectly light snack that’s deliciously low in fat, sodium and calories. It’s made from 100% real soya. No MSG. No Trans fat. Non-GMO.

Try the three exciting flavors- Soyami Soya Chips Original, Pizza and White Cheddar.

New Eyeglasses

My two daughters had their eye check up yesterday. Both have been wearing eyeglasses for maybe 6 years now. My younger daughter oftentimes neglects to wear her eyeglasses because she believes that she doesn't need it at all as she can read well without it. I told the optometrist about it and warned not to miss wearing eyeglasses so to correct her vision. My older daughter, with 325 and 200 for the left retained the vision.

The best way to take care of our eyes:
* do not overly tire our eyes
* have enough sleep
* eat healthy food that's good for the eyes.

Are You Sensitive?

I have a very sensitive teeth and gums and I stick to only one brand of toothpaste. When we went to the leading supermarket few weeks ago, there was no available brand so I chose the other one instead. The problem is, my gums and teeth become swollen every time I try the other brand with flavor. It should be at least plain and no flavor at all. Now I am back to Sensodyne.

Sensitive teeth are most likely to happen when you drink or eat cold or sometimes hot foods or drinks. I already had this painful gums yesterday but I still craved for chocolates and donuts with strawberry fillings. I should not complain now. I gave in to my cravings that added to my swollen gums today.

I remember one time when I consulted the dentist about sensitivity of gums and prescribed a certain brand. I forgot the name. :( When rubbed, I immediately felt relieved.

Acne Treatment

My daughter is getting conscious already with her blackheads. I always remind her to take care of her skin by eating healthy food like fruits and vegetables. When I was her age, I didn't remember having any skin problems especially acne. I easily get conscious and it scares me a lot whenever I have pimple so for my daughter, I keep on reminding her not to touch or squeeze as it will lead to acne scar. But having this kind of problem isn't a big deal anymore today. There is always a solution for every problem. You may click here for a solution that will make your life more beautiful. Don't let the skin problem stop you. Face the world with confidence. Stay fresh and acne free.

Monitoring my Weight

Blame it to Ondoy! Since the day I broke my old weighing scale due to Ondoy flood, I was not able to monitor my weight and I found out that I gained 10 pounds since then. I bought a new one yesterday and need to wipe off that extra pounds on my weight. And why blame my weight into a broken scale when I honestly couldn't end my day without having junk foods, softdrinks and heavy meal. It has been my everyday activity before to check my weight and reduce my extra rice into half cup immediately once found over weight. Now I have no excuse to get that overflowing cupcake belly again. I'll monitor my diet and check my weight from time to time. Btw, I was holding my camera and a bag when I weighed myself here. Lol.

P.B. I'll take note of the progress on my diet. I don't want to lose a week and post an update next week without any improvement. Lol. So for the nth time, please wish me goodluck. =)

Getting a Good Tan

I don't have fairly white skin but I love my skin color the way it is now just like any other Asian ladies with natural skin tone. For some who think nothing but summer just to have sun kissed look, they only wait for that season to expose themselves into the sun using sunblock for darker tan. I prohibit myself doing such as it may cause serious damage to my skin. Other people try tanning bed lotion to achieve the tan color they want for their skin. Sporting tan can add a more exotic look even without putting make up. Some women already have darker tan and that brings appeal even more to many men. Fair skinned ladies are trying hard to get a perfect tan while I am already blessed exerting no effort like going out to the beach to get a tan.

Boost High Protein

It's easy being green and that was what's written in the banner of a backpack mountaineer that I saw in the website. Mountaineers who did the hiking packed themselves with many protein water to keep them hydrated while taking the hike. But even before hitting the trails, they load themselves with lots of carbohydrate and protein food to keep them strong and healthy for the adventure. Aside from flavored protein drinks like sour apple, orange and lemon, some of them take supplement like protein powder to keep them going for a week stay in the mountain. It helps them keep healthy and it boosts their energy while on the hike.

Ups and Downs

Winona Ryder is now back in Hollywood spotlight. She went on hiatus after the scandal happened in her career early 2000 that put her career down. Now she plays cameo role in Black Swan. Spotted together with her co-star, she wears a sexy black dress showing off her curves. At 38, she still looks very sexy. I'm really tempted now to try myself diet pills that work. Don't give me a funny look. I am not aiming for a really sexy body. I just want to trim down my body badly. Anyways, I hope that she takes her career seriously this time. It seems like she is. Every career has its ups and downs and by looking at her photos, I could say that she's now living on a brighter side of life.
